Bed frame removal covers the frame only: divan bases, slatted wooden frames, metal frames, bunk beds, cabin beds, ottoman storage bases and the headboard that goes with them. A bed is the one piece of furniture nobody can get down the stairs on their own, because the base is longer than any landing is wide and a divan has nothing to hold. Send us a photo of the bed, tell us which floor it is on, and we send back one fixed price for taking it apart, carrying it out and disposing of it.

A two-person crew does the dismantling in the bedroom. Wooden and metal frames are unbolted at the corners, slats are lifted out, and a divan is either carried out in its two halves or split if it is a single piece. Ottoman bases have gas struts under the lid that have to be released before the base can be moved safely, and bunk beds come down ladder first. If a wardrobe or a chest of drawers is leaving the same room, add it to the photo and the price covers everything in one visit.

Beds are replaced more often than most furniture, and they tend to be swapped on a delivery day when the old frame suddenly has to be gone. Council bulky waste collection is booked in advance, with the frame left outside on a set date, which rarely lines up. We collect from the bedroom and aim for same-day or next-day wherever possible, so an early message on the day the new bed arrives is worth sending. For the other options, read how to get rid of old furniture.

Furniture Removal is registered with the Environment Agency as an upper tier waste carrier, licence number CBDU526130. A sound wooden or metal frame is passed on for reuse where we can, and the rest goes to a licensed waste transfer station where the timber slats and side rails are recovered as wood and the steel frames, bolts and brackets go to metal recycling. If you are weighing up other routes, our guide on whether a charity will collect your furniture explains what charities will and will not take.

How a bed frame collection works

  1. Send a photo

A picture of the bed from the foot end shows us the size, the type of base and the headboard. Say which floor the bedroom is on and whether there is a lift.

  2. Get a fixed price

We reply with a single price for unbolting the frame, carrying it out and disposing of it. Bunk beds and ottomans are priced from the photo like any other bed.

  3. Book a slot

Tell us which day suits, including a delivery day for a new bed, and we confirm it. Same-day or next-day is offered wherever possible.

  4. Pay once it is loaded

Two people take the bed apart in the room, carry the pieces down and load them. The quoted price is paid then and nothing is added.

Why people use us

Licence you can look up

Upper tier waste carrier licence CBDU526130 is held by Furniture Removal and registered with the Environment Agency. Ask for a waste transfer note afterwards.

Insured on your staircase

Public liability cover of £5 million and employers' liability of £10 million are in place for every bed the crew carries down a flight of stairs.

Unbolting is included

Bed frames have to come apart to leave a room, and that work is part of the quoted price rather than something the crew charges for on the day.

Experience with every type

Fifteen or more years in the trade and over 500 jobs mean the crew has met every bolt, cam lock and gas strut a bed can hide. Five stars on Google.

Getting a bed frame down the stairs and out of the door

A wooden or metal frame is held together by four to eight bolts at the corners and a centre rail, and the crew undoes them with their own tools, lifts the slats out as a bundle and carries the side rails and the headboard as separate pieces. A divan base is a different problem because it is a rigid box with no handles; a double or king usually splits into two halves which are carried on their side down the stairs, while a single divan is carried whole. An ottoman base is the heaviest type, because the lid, the frame and the two gas struts add up, and the struts are released so the lid cannot spring open on the landing. A bunk bed comes down as two beds once the ladder and the guard rails are off. Every piece then goes down the stairs between two people, which is how a king size frame leaves a first-floor room or a flat with a lift too short to take it.

Before we arrive, strip the bed and clear the floor around it so the crew can get to the bolts at the back. Empty divan drawers and ottoman storage, because the base is lifted at an angle and anything inside will shift. If the headboard is fixed to the wall rather than to the frame, say so in your message and the crew will unscrew it. Keep the landing clear and pets in another room while the frame is on the move.

After collection, a sound wooden or metal frame is offered for reuse where we can find a home for it. Anything broken or worn goes to a licensed waste transfer station: timber slats and rails are recovered as wood, steel frames and bolts go to metal recycling, and the fabric and board of a divan or upholstered headboard are sorted out of general waste. Ask and we send a waste transfer note.

Bed frame removal questions

Do I need to take the bed frame apart myself?

No. The crew brings the tools and unbolts the frame in the bedroom as part of the job. If you have already dismantled it, leave the pieces in a pile and we carry them out.

Can you take a divan base from an upstairs bedroom?

Yes. A double or king divan is usually in two halves, and each half is carried down the stairs on its side by two people. A single divan comes down whole. Tell us the floor and we price for it.

Will you remove an ottoman bed with gas struts?

Yes. The crew releases the struts so the lid cannot spring up during the lift, then unbolts the base and carries it out in sections. Ottoman bases are heavier than they look, so mention it in your message.

Can you dismantle and take away a bunk bed?

Yes. The ladder and guard rails come off first, then the two bunks are separated and unbolted like any other frame. Cabin beds and mid sleepers with steps or a desk underneath are collected the same way.

Do you take the headboard too?

Yes. A headboard bolted to the frame comes away when the frame is unbolted. One screwed to the wall is taken down by the crew if you tell us it is fixed, and either kind is carried out with the rest of the bed.

What happens to the frame after you collect it?

If it is sound, we try to pass it on for reuse. If not, it goes to a licensed waste transfer station where the wood and metal are separated and recovered. We hold upper tier licence CBDU526130 and can send a waste transfer note if you want one.
